Hispanic Heritage Month: Recognizing the Roots, Culture & Entrepreneurs Shaping Cannabis

From September 15th to October 15th, the United States proudly celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month. At Canna Provisions, we’re so excited to join the Hispanic community in celebrating their vibrant history and culture.

We believe that diversity is what makes Holyoke and Lee so special. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to shine a spotlight on the incredible contributions and impact these cultures have on our canna-communities.

A Brief History

Hispanic Heritage Month started as Hispanic Heritage Week. It was first introduced by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1968 to recognize the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the United States. It wasn’t until 1988 that President Ronald Reagan extended the celebration to be a month-long to properly recognize and celebrate Hispanic communities.

This month-long celebration aims to uplift people from Hispanic and Latino cultures, including Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of South America. In addition, Hispanic Heritage Month serves as an opportunity to learn more about the history, resilience, determination, and impact Hispanic communities have had on the United States.

Unlike other heritage months, Hispanic Heritage Month begins halfway through September and ends halfway through October. This is intentional and is of great significance. September 15th marks the independence anniversary for many Hispanic Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico celebrates its independence on the 16th, while Chile and Belize celebrate on the 18th and 21st, respectively.

Hispanic and Latino Culture and Cannabis

Cannabis has been a part of Hispanic and Latino culture for centuries, with many indigenous communities using the plant for its medicinal benefits. Although there are deep ties between the cannabis and Hispanic communities, only about 5% of cannabis licenses nationwide belong to these underrepresented communities.

At Canna Provisions, we believe cannabis is for everyone, and it is our goal to not only celebrate our Hispanic and Latino cannabis partners but also empower the Hispanic and Latino community to become part of the industry we are all so passionate about.
