Black History Month is in February.
But February is almost over. Which means, for all the great content that has come out, there are 11 other months to consider. So consider keeping the BHM support alive well past the month most companies use it for branding fodder, and instead just patronize and support these local black-owned businesses.
Below we highlight a handful located around the Pioneer Valley where Canna Provisions Holyoke, our recreational cannabis dispensary-meets-art-gallery and cafe space in downtown Holyoke, MA is located at 380 Dwight Street.
Got more spots we should hype? Send us a suggestion! We’ll keep adding to this list, and will be spotlighting black-owned businesses in the Berkshires near our Lee, MA store 300 yards off I-90/Mass Pike and the closest recreational cannabis dispensary to New York.
DURO WEST AFRICAN CUISINE
Duro specializes in West African culture through food that is “delicately prepared with mostly Nigerian spices”. Owner Bola grew up in a household of six siblings who all got their cooking tutorial from our beloved mom, Durojaiye, which the restaurant is named for.
Bola: “I am hopeful that this unique and culturally-focused restaurant will add value and a unique flavor to the community life of the VALLEY. This is a dream come true!”
9 College Street, South Hadley, MA.
White Lion Brewing Company
Seeing a growth in the craft beer industry and recognizing the absence of local beer in Springfield, MA, Raymond Berry Jr. founded The White Lion Brewing Company with community in mind in 2014. After 6 years of hard work, statewide self distribution and loyal customers, they call 1500 Main Street in Springfield home. Looking for mobile beer truck and catering? They got you.

Dewey’s Jazz Lounge
Owner Kenny Lumpkin is a Western Mass native with over 10 years of experience in the restaurant industry and his love for jazz music and creating genuine connections with other people motivated him to open Dewey’s.
A Western Mass native, Kenny and his three sisters were raised by his mother Pamela in Springfield and Easthampton. Kenny graduated from Emmanuel College in Boston with a bachelor’s degree in Business Management, and is also the owner of New Foundations Realty Group where he offers support to property owners facing financial distress. But true to supporting the local community, Dewey’s also partnered with White Lion Brewing for a special release.

Chef Wayne’s Cajun on the Go
Chef Wayne Hooker is the founder, owner and culinary inspiration for Chef Wayne’s Big Mamou located at 63 Liberty Street, Springfield, MA. Back in 1996, of all the culinary experiences offered in Springfield and the surrounding communities, Cajun cuisine was not on the list. So for over two decades, The Big Mamou has been a destination for many offering made to order Cajun inspired dishes that have been featured on The Phantom Gourmet, profiled in U.S. Airways Magazine and the comic strip “Nancy”, and local newspapers.
Chef Wayne has received every accolade the region can offer for his work as a Chef, and restaurateur. The Big Mamou appears as #1 in the lower pioneer valley – based on customer reviews and feedback – on yelp and trip advisor. Chef Wayne is no stranger to business start-ups, having been co-owner and head chef to several other successful eateries including but not limited to The Big Mamou in Williamsburg, MA., Simply Southern, Hartford, CT, Pioneer Brew Pub, The Hungry Pelican – just to name a few. His newest venture, Cajun on the Go will allow him to build on the success, branding, and reputation for food quality and consistency he created with The Big Mamou adding new twist to the menu and again, finding an underserved niche in the food take-out and delivery market.
