What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual global event that unites people in awareness of our planet and the need to create sustainable practices to ensure its continued protection. Every year, nearly one-billion people from over 193 countries celebrate Earth Day through local environmental initiatives in places like Holyoke and Lee, MA, and larger, national events across the country that educate people about environmental issues and spark appreciation for our planet. This year’s Earth Day theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.”

How Did Earth Day Begin?

The first Earth Day was 55 years ago, on April 22, 1970. After a devastating oil spill on January 28, 1969, just six miles off the Santa Barbara, CA, coast, dumped three-million gallons of oil into the Pacific Ocean, environmental activists sounded the alarm on the growing environmental damage human activity was causing across the United States.

Images of oil-soaked seabirds and helpless baby seals sparked outrage over the unimaginable death of 10,000-plus seals, dolphins, seabirds, and sea lions off California’s coast. The disaster ignited the public, from local and national environmental activists to US senators, resulting in new environmental regulations, awareness campaigns, and the first Earth Day.

What Is Environmental Sustainability?

Environmental sustainability is an ideology focused on managing our bountiful natural resources in a more responsible way to ensure long-lasting safeguards for our planet. Environmental sustainability requires balancing human activities with environmental preservation by implementing sustainable practices, such as reducing deforestation, pollution, toxic chemical dumping, and increasing the protection of our water systems, wildlife, and natural ecosystems.

How Can Cannabis Help with Environmental Sustainability?

While cannabis is best known for its recreational, medicinal, and general well-being properties, this ancient plant also offers many sustainable solutions for our planet, including its potential to reduce its carbon footprint.

What Is a Carbon Footprint?

A carbon footprint is measured by the total greenhouse gases that something/someone, directly or indirectly, emits into the environment. This number (carbon footprint) measures the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide (CO₂) produced and the impact it has on climate change.

What is Cannabis Carbon Footprint?

Studies on the true carbon footprint of cannabis are only emerging as cannabis legalization is still in its infancy. Available studies typically look at only one aspect of cannabis’s environmental impact (carbon footprint) based on factors like excessive packaging, transportation, and energy use in the production and distribution of cannabis, neglecting its overall sustainability.

When considering factors like phytoremediation, the ability of cannabis to absorb pollutants, including heavy metals like cadmium, from the soil, significantly increases the sustainability of the plant. Cannabis grown outdoors also has a much lower carbon footprint than indoor cultivation, which relies on large HVAC systems and extensive lighting, which makes up 89% of the total energy required for indoor production.

6 Ways Cannabis Growers Contribute to Environmental Sustainability and Earth Day

  1. Water-Saving Systems: Sustainable cultivators take advantage of smart water-saving practices, including drip irrigation, harvesting rainwater, and water-recycling to conserve water.
  2. Renewable Energy: Sustainable cannabis farmers use energy-efficient practices, such as LED lighting, solar panels, and smart-climate-control systems that can reduce energy requirements and the plant’s total carbon footprint.
  3. Organic Farming: Organically grown cannabis is pesticide-free, relying on natural practices to reduce toxic chemical run-off and soil contamination.
  4. Eco-Friendly Practices: Sustainable growing practices, including regular crop rotation, zero-tilling farming, and covering plants, can mitigate soil erosion and reduce environmental impacts.
  5. Reduced and Recyclable Packaging: Sustainable cannabis cultivators and dispensaries can use less packaging and more biodegradable or recyclable materials, including 100% hemp paper.
  6. Soil Remediation: As a powerful hyperaccumulator, cannabis can absorb toxins from the air, ground, water, and fertilizers at significant levels. Sustainable growers plant cannabis in areas that can benefit from phytoremediation, improving biodiversity and ecosystems.
