Canna Provisions Holyoke for some is the end result of searching “dispensary near me” for legal adult-use anywhere near Chicopee, Northampton, Springfield, and other points in Western Massachusetts.
For others, it’s what they find when they look for multiple award-winning adult-use retail dispensary experiences providing product education and consultative cannabis shopping for those that want it, and a place to just grab high-testing flower or some large-format buds of Smash Hits cannabis. Whatever the reason someone finds themselves at Canna Provisions Holyoke, about 10 minutes off the highway and right on Dwight Street in the historic 150-year-old restored paper mill and former artist community, once inside visitors are presented a feast for the eyes.
Amazing displays of actual product packaging and information to interact with. Immersive cannabis flower displays using upcycled industrial equipment and gear from the Holyoke retail dispensary in its former life. And each month, you can find a different local Holyoke artists featured on the walls of Canna Provisions Holyoke with our new local arts spotlight series showcasing Pioneer Valley artists in an adult-use cannabis dispensary-meets-art gallery vibe.
Cannabis and the arts. A natural pairing of mutual support and respect at Canna Provisions. .
november 2021 LOCAL-ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE:
BRING US THROUGH YOUR EVOLUTION AS AN ARTIST
I have always used art as a form of expression, even since childhood. In the beginning, it was more about getting the emotions out. Later on I became interested in seeing how far I can take an image. Art should feel free, not like a prison.
IS YOUR USE OF BLUE A NOD TO PICASSO OR, YOU KNOW, YOU JUST REALLY LIKE USING BLUE?
I call this line my ‘Rhythm and Blues’ series. Honestly it all started as a challenge for myself, steppIng into the unknown without any safeguard. Pressing through the difficulty is how I grow. A mentor of mine actually mentioned Picasso as well and that only made me more confident that It could be done and appreciated.
YOU’VE GOT A LINE OF MOOD MATS YOU MUST TELL US ABOUT
Id have to say my favorite mood mat Ive done would have to be my pop-out Earth Mat (it was the first of its kind, a two-for-one mat). I am actually painting a commission for my favorite glass artist HENDY. He plans on having the painting done in vector and using the image for merchandise, mood mats etc
IS THERE SOMETHING MORE PERSONAL TO THEM AS WELL?
Compass Recovery out of Agawam, was looking for artwork for the building, and they gave me complete creative freedom. I decided on a Phoenix due to the symbolism of rebirth and while painting this mythical bird I planned on a solid creature with total feathered details, but was reminded of some sound advice from years ago back when I was an EMT: You are a complete person, without people, places and things. That has always stayed with me. So I created the imagery of night and day in the wings, and the Phoenix gripping a gold chalice. In the end my message for it was about when you realize that even in the darkest of nights, or brightest of days, your cup is always full…in that moment you can be re-born like the Phoenix. This piece currently hangs in the group therapy room at the facility, and I know what it’s like to struggle daily. My battle with PTSD has almost all but cost me my life. I found my art and the spirit I transfer from inside me to canvas, paper, whatever rips the sick and hurt from my being and changes it into something beautiful that may be able to provide others with similar relief in viewing, if not draw attention to a new way to heal. That is real magic to me. What a privilege it was to do that piece. I needed to have painted it for my own healing, and hopefully it will help others heal in their own way too.
WHAT’S YOUR MEDIUM OF CHOICE?
Well I do love them all! Id have to say Acrylic. Spray paint and colored pencils too, but when it comes down to it I am simply always searching for new ways to transfer spirit into art!
BIG CATS PLAY A THEME IN YOUR WORK. IT FEELS SINCERE.
I’ve actually always had a fascination with big cats from an early age. Animals have always been very therapeutic for me, throughout my whole life. Their loyalty and lack of judgement has always brought me comfort, and I am heavily involved with the African Wildlife Foundation to help fight against poaching.
WHAT DO YOU WANT SOMEONE LOOKING AT YOUR WORK, OR A COLLECTOR CONSIDERING PICKING ONE UP, TO KNOW ABOUT YOU AS AN ARTIST?
I struggle on a daily basis with PTSD. But something so dark can lead to something beautiful with the right direction. Art is therapy, as well as a platform for awareness and change. Art is my passion, and my mission is to create positive change with each piece I create.
