HOLYOKE ARTIST SHOWCASE WITH MONTGOMERY ARTIST ERIC CLARKE

Canna Provisions Holyoke for some is the end result of searching “dispensary near me” for legal adult-use anywhere near Chicopee, Northampton, Springfield, and other points in Western Massachusetts.

For others, it’s what they find when they look for multiple award-winning adult-use retail dispensary experiences providing product education and consultative cannabis shopping for those that want it, and a place to just grab high-testing flower or some large-format buds of Smash Hits cannabis. Whatever the reason someone finds themselves at Canna Provisions Holyoke, about 10 minutes off the highway and right on Dwight Street in the historic 150-year-old restored paper mill and former artist community, once inside visitors are presented a feast for the eyes.

Amazing displays of actual product packaging and information to interact with. Immersive cannabis flower displays using up-cycled industrial equipment and gear from the Holyoke retail dispensary in its former life. And each month, you can find a different local Holyoke artists featured on the walls of Canna Provisions Holyoke with our new local arts spotlight series showcasing Pioneer Valley artists in an adult-use cannabis dispensary-meets-art gallery vibe.

Cannabis and the arts. A natural pairing of mutual support and respect at Canna Provisions.  .

JANUARY 2022 LOCAL-ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE:

ERIC CLARKE

TAKE US THROUGH YOUR ARTISTS JOURNEY.

I don’t remember ever not drawing. I feel like I’ve been drawing and making art since my first memories. I did my undergrad work at Pratt institute in Brooklyn, New York and received my BFA in illustration. At that time it was hard to find freelance illustration work, so I received my teaching certificate at Westfield State College in 2004. To this day I still am a full-time teacher. After teaching and successfully doing illustration for some years, in 2017 I went back to school for a masters in illustration at the University of Hartford. I graduated and received my masters in 2019.

YOUR WORK HAS A LOT OF POP-CULTURE INFLUENCE AND ABSURDIST SURREALISM. WHERE DOES THAT COME FROM?

As a kid I grew up with Mad Magazine, Wacky Packages, and then the Garbage Pail Kids. I always love the art of parody, ridiculous things, things that make no sense. I definitely take influence from surrealism and Dada as well, artists like Rene Magritte, MC Escher, and Salvador Dali. I am also very much influenced by the  illustrations of Ralph Steadman, and animated shorts of Terry Gilliam. Pretty much all the things that made me laugh back in the day… As far as movies go, I love most of the stuff from the 1980’s. I like the fun, and corny at times vibe about those movies. They were a lot of fun! And of course there’s Star Wars and the Marvel movies (MCU) out now are a lot of fun and bring me back to the days of collecting comics in middle school…

YOUR WORK SEEMS PERFECT FOR THE NFT WORLD. ANYTHING ON THAT FRONT?

No not yet, but it is definitely on my radar!

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR ILLUSTRATED BOOK, MONSTAH STATES

Monstah States actually started out as my thesis project for grad school. It’s a book that goes through all fifty states, and turns them into monsters, gives them a funny, sometimes absurd name, and has facts about the state. I self published the book in 2019, made 500 of them and sold them all. I currently need to make more. I’ve been hesitant because of Covid and the lack of conventions and places to physically sell the book at. I’m really hoping to order some more in 2022.

TALK ABOUT THE PIECES GOING UP IN HOLYOKE AT OUR STORE.

All the pieces in the store are from the last 3 to 4 years. It’s really a little bit of everything from my time in grad school until now. The barcode illustrations are the newest pieces of my longest running idea. I am currently working on storyboards for a graphic novel currently titled “Barcodia”.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST PARTNERSHIP WITH A LEGAL DISPENSARY?

This is my first and only (so far). I just want to say that I really appreciate what Canna Provisions are doing for the art community. Having a different artist display their work every month is a great opportunity for all artists in the region.

LOVE YOUR BEER CAN WORK. HOW MANY BREWERIES IN MASSACHUSETTS HAVE YOU WORKED WITH?

Thank you! As of now, I only do cans for Two Weeks Notice in West Springfield Mass. I’ve done a few collaboration cans between Two Weeks Notice, and some of the other breweries in the area, like White Lion, Vanished Valley, and Amherst Brewing. I’ve also done some work for Cushnoc brewery up in Augusta Maine. Doing can art is a lot of fun for me, I like the format of it, being a curved surface I can have a lot of fun with the composition of the art…

LET’S SEE: MUPPETS, HUNTER S. THOMPSON, CHEWBACCA AND THANOS. LET’S HEAR YOUR INFLUENCES.

I would say I definitely take influences from the things I grew up with in my childhood. Everything that you mentioned are all things that I loved as a kid in the 1980’s and early 90’s and still do now. At the same time, I’m always looking at new art, and find influence in completely random things too. So I guess the answer is both…
