For those of you who mastered the metric system, you can walk into our dispensary with confidence. However, if you’re not a whiz with metric measurement, you probably need information about what all these measurements mean. What exactly are some of the common purchase measurements of cannabis?

What Exactly is an Eighth Then?
It is the common measurement the cannabis world uses to quantify a weed purchase. America is one of the only remaining countries to use the Imperial system of measurement (feet, inches, yards). While we are more than accustomed to that method, the cannabis industry uses the metric system.
A gram is the smallest unit of cannabis available for purchase. Many dispensaries offer deals for grams, but typically the best deal for your dollar is in an eighth, or 3.5g. A gram of any strain is usually the size of a walnut. According to silver-therapeutics.com, an eighth of weed weighs a little more than a penny. The array of flower buds and sizes for an eighth depends on the strain. Some strains are tightly packed, and other strains are fluffier. Either way, compliance makes sure the amount of weed that determines an eighth is regulated so that you won’t be let down.
Why an “eighth”? An eighth represents a fraction of an ounce or 28 grams of cannabis. An eighth of twenty-eight is 3.5. Dispensaries also offer ounce deals, but it is less commonly purchased. After an eighth, you have a quarter, a half-ounce, an ounce, and a pound. An eighth of weed can make approximately three and a half gram joints, seven half-gram joints, or about ten average-sized bowls.
How Much Can I Purchase?
Now that you know the basics of cannabis measurement, you probably want to buy several ounces out of excitement. While we admire your enthusiasm, Massachusetts law limits the purchase of marijuana. You must be at least 21 to purchase recreationally.
Massachusetts dispensaries allow purchases of up to one ounce of flower or five grams of concentrate. You are also not allowed to cross state lines with any cannabis (sorry, tourists) and may only be in possession of up to ten ounces of marijuana in your home.
