When Canna Provisions set out to partner with a chosen concentrates manufacturer for an historic, first-ever solventless live hash rosin production using Berkshires-grown Smash Hits cannabis, it was clear it needed to be a partner that both has the tools and the skills to handle such a moment in cannabis history.

For context: Smash Hits cannabis comes to you by way of our cultivation team lead by Greg “Chemdog” Krzanowski, and the entire talented crew of men and women working in our garden in Sheffield, MA which also brought Massmosa to life in the Smash Hits oeuvre. Inside that hallowed grow you’ll find the only place where Smash Hits is being cultivated using genetics that stretch back 30 years.

Which is how the crew partnered with the esteemed team at Treeworks in West Hatfield, MA. The braintrust there has long roots with the legacy market and now the legal, and with Chemdog trusting their lead concentrates guy (and their lab of top shelf bubble-hash and solventless press machinery) to do right by Smash Hits knowing that never before has legal, solventless live hash rosin made from Chemdog flower grown by Chemdog (and crew) been available. In short: Treeworks needed to nail this.

We’re happy to report: They did. And then some.

BUT WHAT IS LIVE HASH ROSIN? 

Live hash rosin focuses on preserving the trichome heads and terpenes present in the flower material, and our Smash Hits is ‘fresh frozen’ in order to be gently washed in filter bags and ice-cold water. The filter bags separate different micron size trichome heads from the cannabis plant and different macron size filter bags are used depending on the desired yield (in short, bags in bags in bags so all that’s left is the unruptured microencapsulated resin glands).

The end result: Bubble Hash! Which is all the trichomes that have been separated from the plant in a concentrated, condensed form. Just natural terpenes and full spectrum cannabinoids, with a flavor profile and smell coming directly from the cannabinoid profile of the source flower, which is why you want to use only the best. And in this case, it’s out of this world.

Once the crew collects the bubble hash made from Smash Hits flower, they assemble 30g packs to use with a solventless press that essentially uses heat and pressure to squeeze and concentrate the material into the final live hash rosin (squish heads note: they tend to get 75-85% yield on their runs washing in 44 gallon food grade steel tubs of ice water).

It’s worth pointing out the attention to detail here. The Treeworks and Smash Hits crew worked hand in hand to ensure they harvested the plant material at the optimum time. Harvesting a week early or a week late can make a massive difference in the end product, as the maturity of the gland head of the trichomes determines how it moves through the bags.

THE TAKEAWAY

Cold cured, fresh frozen flower is the best material to work with for creating live hash rosin. Fresh flower can dry out and lose its punch at room temperature, and in the words of the Treeworks concentrates leader Nick, (Chemdog’s longtime friend and trusted handler of choice flower): “It’s all about genetics and terpenes, and when you have that like Smash Hits produces, you get the kind of solventless live hash rosin that is the truest expression of the cannabis plant. The best.”
