Celebrate Women’s History Month by Supporting Women-Owned Cannabis Brands

Though women deserve to be celebrated every day, March is the month we give them special homage. Women’s History Month is derived from International Women’s Day, which we acknowledge on March 8th, and which eventually was declared Women’s History Week.

There is an abundance to cover when it comes to women’s history and their accomplishments. The history of women in the cannabis industry highlights the meaningful strides they’ve made and continue to make.

Women’s History Month & Cannabis

Since medical marijuana is now legal in nearly every state and recreational use is permitted across more than half the country, opportunities in business, science, and academia have expanded significantly.

Men still dominate the cannabis industry, as recently as 2023, approximately 80% of people across various industry roles were men. Yet female cannabis entrepreneurs are gaining ground with real, lasting momentum.

Several forces are driving that shift. Today’s young women entering college or launching careers aren’t carrying the stigma that shaped their mothers’ and grandmothers’ relationship with the plant. They come to cannabis with curiosity rather than caution.

Many are also drawn to its wellness dimensions like sleep support, anxiety relief, and pain management, which are areas where cannabis shows particular promise, and women have long led conversations about holistic, whole-body health.

Beyond that, women bring a distinct perspective to retail spaces, helping dispensaries feel genuinely welcoming to every kind of customer. They understand what other women in the cannabis industry are looking for, in the products themselves and in how those products are presented.

Back in 2021, Canna Provisions’ CEO, Meg Sanders, appeared as a guest on the Canna Mom Podcast, where she spoke about cannabis as a tool for individual wellness and environmental stewardship.

Sanders articulated a clear-eyed vision: that the industry’s future would be shaped by its commitment to both health and diversity. With a loyal base of older women customers and a new generation of advocates unburdened by old stigmas, the foundation is strong.

Why Supporting Women-Owned Brands Matters

Despite everything they bring to the table, women-owned cannabis brands still face structural headwinds. Gender bias persists, and women in leadership roles have often had to prove themselves twice over by demonstrating the same competence as their counterparts while moving through environments not always built with them in mind. They’ve shown up anyway, and in doing so, they’ve made the entire industry more inclusive and thoughtful.

There are ways to put your support into action.

Seek out and purchase from cannabis brands led by women.

Share what you discover with friends (product recommendations go a long way).

Pick up a gift for someone you care about from a brand with a mission behind it.

And shop from dispensaries like Canna Provisions that stock products from women-owned operations.

Women-Led Brands Making an Impact

Canna Provisions carries a variety of products from women-owned companies. Here are just a few to get you started on your search:

The Healing Rose lives up to its name. Their product line is built around restoration and self-care, and the Relax & Unwind CBD Bath Soak is a standout. A small ritual worth making time for.

COAST Cannabis Co. is one of the most recognized brands in Massachusetts, and yes, it is women-owned. Their Mango Gummies offer a flavorful, approachable way to unwind. This is a crowd-pleasing option for new and seasoned consumers.

Mindy’s Edibles is the work of award-winning chef Mindy Segal, who brings culinary precision and genuine passion to every formulation. The Lush Black Cherry Gummies are a particular highlight. These are a hybrid blend of CBD and THC that delivers balance.

Kiva was born out of frustration with the unreliable, unpleasant edibles that dominated the early market. Kiva bars were among the first precisely dosed, lab-tested edibles in California, and that same commitment carried into every format they’ve developed since, from bite-sized chocolates to mints, gummies, and chews.
